Amid the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry, there are many skill levels and certifications that can be obtained. However, when it comes to the ‘champion’ of determining skills, the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification reigns. As the largest and most widely recognized organization amid the HVAC and refrigeration industry, having a certification from NATE is a big deal for both heating and cooling technicians and consumers—for good reasons.
Don’t be fooled into believing that all HVAC technicians are NATE certified, as only a handful of providers enjoy this status. It is entirely up to the discretion of technicians and the companies that employ them whether they undergo this rigorous training and testing. And let’s face it—not all service providers are up for the challenge of being NATE certified for competency and amid specialty areas.
What Does Obtaining NATE Certification Require?
Certification as a NATE technician means that a provider has a solid working knowledge of the HVAC and refrigeration industry. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their skills to a training provider and also pass an intensive written CORE examination to covers basic and mid-level abilities in the field. Technicians can maintain this certification as long as it is not allowed to lapse, and HVACR skills and knowledge covered on the CORE exam include:
- Basic Electrical
- Safety Precautions
- Basic Construction
- Taking Humidity and Temperature Measurements
- Achieving Optimal Conditions Using Basic Science
Those aspiring for a specialty certification in installation and/or service and repair can take advanced level examinations.
Specialties of HVAC-R NATE Certification
Specialty examinations will ensure a candidate’s competency and knowledge of installing or repairing and/or servicing equipment. Installation technicians will need to display their skills in removing old systems, building in spaces for new installs/replacements, understand how to set up and power on the system through all cycles and take the necessary readings for operations and safety.
Those obtaining NATE certification for repair or service must possess the skills and knowledge of installation technicians in addition to being able to meet the guidelines for this specialty area. Some of the testing will cover candidate’s ability to:
- Independently install HVAC systems.
- Power up systems and ensure that all sequences of performance properly function.
- Obtain and interpret system readings to determine proper operation that meets the product’s specifications.
- Utilize accurate diagnostics to disclose any performance inadequacies and identify proper corrective actions.
